I am an experienced editor and proofreader and have been doing freelance editing work for several years now. I also edit and proofread for publishing houses. I take on a few freelance clients as my schedule allows, so to be sure of a spot, please give as much lead time as possible. My speciality/preference is erotica/erotic romance/romance and crime/thriller, though I will also consider other genres.
I have supplied some of my freelance client testimonials below. Please feel free to contact me using the contact page if you have any questions, would like to get a quote or discuss a project.
I highly recommend reading this article I wrote first, as a handy guide to polishing your writing before sending to an editor.
**IMPORTANT INFORMATION**
I require a £30 British pounds non-refundable deposit up front to secure your spot. I will then take half the remaining balance (minus the deposit) when I begin editing or proofreading, and the remaining amount when I have finished. For editing projects, I require the client to sign an informal contract before I will take on any projects from them. You will also need to know how to use Microsoft Word’s Track Changes function.
Editing
For editing (this includes content editing, advice on plot holes, sentence structure, consistency etc, as well as proofreading as I go along), my price is 0.0055 British pounds per word, i.e. £5.50 per 1,000 words. This doesn’t mean I’ll only work with UK authors – far from it! – I am happy to work with authors from all over the globe and am familiar with both UK and US English. I accept payment via PayPal, Stripe, SumUp and bank transfer, depending on where you’re from. The exact price will depend on the payment provider’s exchange rate at the time of the transaction, as their rates vary and I invoice in British pounds. Please note, this includes a maximum of three passes (if more are needed I will consider this but will charge an extra fee to compensate for my time).
Proofreading
For proofreading, my price is 0.0035 British pounds per word, i.e. £3.50 per 1,000 words. See above re: clients/payment outside the UK and terms.

“When it comes to editorial services I know I’m in safe hands with Lucy Felthouse. I’ve worked with numerous editors over the years, and once I’d had my work edited by Lucy I knew I couldn’t work with someone more eagle-eyed, knowledgeable, thorough and professional.

“When my first novel was published in 2019, my publisher assigned me Lucy to edit that book. When I became an independent author in 2021, I was delighted that I could continue to work with Lucy as my editor. Her sharp eyes pick up on so many issues in my manuscripts and her suggestions are always insightful. Working with her has not only helped improve the books we have worked on together, but has also helped me to develop as a writer and avoid many of the pitfalls other independent authors fall into. Her rates are very reasonable for the level of input she provides. I highly recommend her editorial services.” Mairibeth MacMillan

“Not only was Lucy a fantastic editor, she also seemed to ‘get’ me, and so was a great help when we needed to discuss certain points. Her sound knowledge of English and grammar were extremely useful and I was pleased that, instead of simply correcting my work, she took the time and trouble to explain why the word/grammar/phrase/capital letter, etc was questionable, thus reminding me of long-since-forgotten ‘rules’ of English and writing which I duly noted for future reference. I thoroughly enjoyed working with Lucy and am confident that my story is now the best it can be. I will certainly be using Lucy’s services again in the future and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend her to anyone.” Bella Settarra
